Rubbish

Local Pimlico Warwick Councillors have secured a group of specially trained officers to undertake a targeted operation in the area to tackle the growing issue of fly tipping, particularly around the big black bins.

The Street Waste Action Team (SWAT) was first set up last year and have had success in places like Bayswater which saw dramatic reductions in fly tipping after their intervention.

Speaking ahead of the launch of the operation which begins on 28th October for three weeks, Cllr Nickie Aiken said: “I share the frustration of my fellow Pimlico residents who are fed up with people, whether it is neighbours, visitors or even people who don’t live here bringing their rubbish in their cars to dump, particularly around shared bin areas. Most people want to do the right thing but as there is a 30% turnover of residents in Pimlico every year many aren’t aware of their pavement collections and how to properly dispose of their rubbish. We hope a mixture of enforcement and education will improve the situation and make our streets pleasant for everyone.”

Officers will work with the councillors and local resident groups to learn more about where and when most dumping occurs, as well as undertake an awareness campaign on how to dispose of waste and recycling correctly. There will be a drop-in events with the SWAT team where residents can ask questions about dumping or street cleaning issues.

Fly-tipping is a serious criminal offence and risks a fixed penalty notice of £200. For more information visit the Council's website.
