Mobile phone snatches soar in Westminster’s ‘Theft End’

Mobile Phone theft

Oxford Street, Regent Street and Shaftesbury Avenue top a list of West End streets where your phone is most likely to be stolen in Westminster.

We asked Cllr Paul Swaddle OBE, Leader of the Conservative Group at Westminster City Council, to tell us more.

"Over 34,000 thefts were reported in the last year. However, these figures are just the tip of the iceberg, as many people no longer bother to report. Many stolen phones are then shipped abroad or even resold illegally in convenience shops on our high streets.

The Metropolitan Police is trying to fight back against this crime epidemic while facing cuts to its ranks and the closure of police stations.

Unfortunately, the Labour-run council in Westminster and the Labour Mayor of London are weak and ineffective. We know there are more tools and powers they can use. Instead, they seem to focus on ‘engagement’ with the criminal gangs rather than dish out tough enforcement measures to protect residents and visitors in our city.

If Westminster Conservatives are elected in 2026, we will have a cabinet member for enforcement – a new role to ensure that enforcement at all levels is made a priority, and this role will also hold the police to account.

I also want to make it easier for victims to report crime and anti-social behaviour and have asked the Met police to simplify the reporting process and ensure officers across the City help people report crimes.

Together we can make Westminster a city safer for all."

The Met has confirmed the top thirty streets for mobile phone theft in Westminster, during 2024.
