Oxford Street Pedestrianisation: It's time to think about people living nearby

Leading the news, in print, online and on TV, is the Mayor of London's plan to pedestrianise Oxford Street, supported by the Labour government. We spoke with Cllr Paul Swaddle, who is greatly concerned about the impact on local people living around Oxford Street, in Westminster's West End. Paul explains,

 

"I'm here on Wigmore Street.

 

"The story today is about Oxford Street.

 

"The story for tomorrow is where on earth are all these buses going to go? Where all the taxi movements.

 

"How will we keep our streets around Oxford Street safe and accessible?"

Hands Off Oxford Street!

On Tuesday, the Deputy Mayor of London announced that Sadiq Khan would be taking over Oxford Street early, with Transport for London designated as the traffic authority for the street. It was clear by the nature of the announcement that Westminster City Council were not prepared for this.
