Elected MPs should not serve as Councillors in different council areas

We caught up with Cllr Paul Swaddle, Leader of the Conservative Group at Westminster City Council. Paul believes that elected MPs for different parts of the country should not remain as Councillors here in Westminster, and should not claim councillor allowances alongside their MP salaries of over £90,000 a year.

Paul explains,

"I'm here at City Hall.

"On the 4th of July, two of the local councillors were elected as MPs, one in Macclesfield and one in Bournemouth.

"And I wish them well.

"However, locally, you deserve proper representation, and these councillors have been missing not for weeks, but for nearly a year or more. Please sign our petition and ask them to resign now and make way for proper representation."

If you share Paul's concerns, please support calls for Cllr Jessica Toale, MP for Bournemouth West and Westminster Councillor for the West End, and Cllr Tim Roca, MP for Macclesfield and Westminster Councillor for Harrow Road, to stand down.

After working for over a year on the south west coast – nearly 100 miles from the West End – Cllr Toale has been elected a Labour MP in Bournemouth West.  Locally we’ve been losing out.

Homelessness and rough sleeping is rising under Labour

Monday, 16 March, 2026
The numbers are stark. Homelessness and rough sleeping in Westminster are at record highs and is the highest of any council in the UK. The Labour-led council has allowed this crisis to get worse, with near year-on-year increases, without proper support to help people off the streets. This is the reality of life under this Labour-led Council: distracted by pet projects and headlines instead of helping vulnerable people who really need it.
