More than 1,000 dangerously parked dockless bikes have been seized in Westminster since May, BBC News has reported. Westminster City Council has doubled its enforcement patrols, and a record 217 bikes were seized in a single week. More than 5,300 fixed penalty notices have also been issued, worth more than £53,000.
Cllr Caroline Sargent, Deputy Leader of Westminster City Council and Cabinet Member for Enforcement, said: "We promised we would take action against badly parked dockless bikes and we meant it. Behind each of these 1,000 seizures is a resident who has been inconvenienced by a bike left where it shouldn't be. That could be a parent with a pushchair, a wheelchair user blocked from getting through, or someone forced to step into the road."
She said bike companies "must take responsibility for their property".
The figures come as operators Lime, Voi and Bolt told the London Assembly's Transport Committee that they face a "patchwork" of rules across the capital. New powers for Transport for London to regulate the bikes are not expected until 2028. According to the BBC, hire bikes were involved in 18% of cycle collisions in 2025.
