The Latest Sadiq Khan Sham on Oxford Street
Sadiq Khan is attempting to permanently change Oxford Street and more than twenty streets around it with Traffic Management Orders.
These permanent legal orders were quietly published the day after local elections without properly informing local people. Businesses and residents in the area had no idea it was happening.
That is not consultation. It is a stitch-up.
We have seen this approach before. Big announcements from City Hall. And when you ask the questions that actually matter: where does the traffic go, how does the street get serviced, what happens to access for less mobile people?
Silence.
Conservative-led Westminster City Council will not stand by while the Mayor locks in permanent changes to traffic routes without answering basic questions.
We are demanding TfL scrap this process, that the Mayor halt these changes, provide the answers residents and businesses deserve, and start again with genuine transparency.
The people of Westminster deserve a say in the future of their city. Westminster Labour surrendered Oxford Street to Sadiq Khan and sided with him when he ignored their concerns.
We promised in our manifesto to fight for Oxford Street and for genuine consultation on decisions that affect local people. That is exactly what we are doing.
Cllr Paul Swaddle OBE, Leader of Westminster City Council, said:
“This is a stitch-up, plain and simple. The Mayor and TfL tried to force through permanent changes to the most famous shopping street in the world, the day after an election, in a consultation so quiet that the people whose livelihoods depend on Oxford Street never even knew it was happening. That is not how you treat the nation’s high street, and it is not how you treat Londoners.
And this is how Sadiq Khan governs: all grand announcements, no answers. He has handed the West End to an unelected quango that answers to nobody, he cannot tell residents and businesses the most basic things about how this will actually work, and he is misleading Londoners about a scheme he cannot even explain. He should halt these orders today and rerun this consultation properly. If he refuses, he is telling every business and resident in the West End that their voice simply does not count.”
We will hold Sadiq Khan to account and expose his attempts to impose changes on Oxford Street behind your back.
If you back our call for the Mayor to stop, answer for this process and do it properly with the transparency local people deserve, add your name below.
