Cycling in and around Vincent Square

Westminster City Council is proposing changes to traffic and cycling arrangements around Vincent Square. These include introducing two-way cycling on part of the Square and altering existing vehicle and cyclist movements.

Although the Vincent Square Association objected, and your local Conservative councillors told Officers not to go ahead with the scheme, the Labour administration is taking it forward.  In practical terms, the proposal would
introduce two-way cycling on the carriageway along the section of Vincent Square close toresidential entrances and regular pedestrian crossing points. This would replace the current one-way or mixed-use arrangement.

Local people have told us that the proposed scheme may:

  • Increase the risk of conflict between cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles
  • Endanger children, older residents, and those with mobility impairments
  • Create confusion in a confined residential environment
  • Erode the calm, residential character of the Square
  • Be introduced without adequate local consultation or a proper assessment of cumulative impact

Support for cycling and active travel does not mean support for poorly designed schemes in sensitive residential neighbourhoods.
