Police Officers in central London

Now that the clocks have gone back, we spoke to Westminster Council's Conservative Opposition Leader, Cllr Paul Swaddle, who made the case for  better street lighting, stronger crime reporting, and increased on‑street enforcement to make Westminster safer.

Paul explains

"The clocks have now gone back and it’s getting darker, earlier. At this time of year, we must all take extra care when out and about. At this time of year, we must all take extra care when out and about. One simple but important way to help keep our communities safe is by ensuring our streets are well-lit.

"If you notice a streetlight that isn’t working, please take a moment to report it to the Council. Well-lit streets make everyone feel safer and help deter crime. You can report a faulty light quickly by visiting the link below. If you feel the Council isn't acting quickly enough, please get in touch with me and my team.

"Unfortunately, this season also brings an increase in anti-social behaviour, particularly involving fireworks, and an uptick in thefts as deliveries rise ahead of Christmas.

"Our overstretched police, underfunded by Sadiq Khan, continue to struggle to maintain a visible presence on our streets. But we can all play our part by reporting every crime, no matter how small. This ensures police records remain accurate and that resources are targeted where they’re needed most. The quickest way to report is online.

"If we are elected to run Westminster Council next May, I pledge to appoint a Cabinet Member for Enforcement — placing safety and accountability at the heart of the Council’s work. We will strengthen on-street enforcement across the city to tackle anti-social behaviour and theft head-on.

"Together, we can, and will, make Westminster a safer city for everyone."

At Labour’s Westminster City Council budget last week, I made Westminster Labour answer for their reckless spending and weak action on rising crime and declining street standards. Westminster Labour has wasted £27 million on a failed housing contractor, self-awarded senior Labour councillors pay rises of up to 62 per cent and are projected to hike your Council Tax by 75 per cent over the next four years.
