Christmas tree

We welcome visitors to Westminster all year round - but this month will be particularly busy. Christmas is a great opportunity to reflect on why we choose to make this city our home, especially if you're able to share the festive fun with children or grandchildren.

Across Westminster, there are plenty of places to see Christmas lights. Here are a few:

  • Regent Street: Famous for its "Spirit of Christmas" angel lights, this iconic street features a stunning display running from Langham Place to Waterloo Place.
  • Oxford Street: Known for its twinkling stars, this busy shopping street is a must-visit during the festive season.
  • Covent Garden: Home to a magnificent Christmas tree and elaborate decorations, including oversized bells and mistletoe chandeliers.
  • Carnaby Street: Offers a unique themed display each year, with vibrant and creative decorations.
  • Leicester Square: Features large illuminated stars and a festive market atmosphere
  • This Thursday, the Lord Mayor of Westminster will join Norwegian dignitaries to light the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square. The spruce tree is a gift from the people of Oslo, in thanks to Britain's support for Norway during World War II.

This Thursday, the Lord Mayor of Westminster will join Norwegian dignitaries to light the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square. The spruce tree is a gift from the people of Oslo, in thanks to Britain's support for Norway during World War II.

You can watch the lighting up and join the Salvation Army and Choir of St. Martin’s to sing carols from 5.45 to 6.30 pm, completely free. If you’re on X, follow the tree’s official feed here.

Also this week, Christmas Tree celebrations are happening at Warwick Avenue, Little Venice at 5.30 today and at 4.45 pm on Friday at Paddington Rec.

Christmas Services are being held at Westminster Abbey, at Westminster Cathedral and in churches across the city. Many local neighbourhoods hold lighting up ceremonies and festive activities aimed at bringing people together throughout the holiday season.

As you enjoy Christmas in Westminster, as we welcome thousands of visitors to our city, remember to stay safe and look out for those more vulnerable around us.

PS: If you are able, please consider supporting one of Westminster Council's Hidden Network, the local charities tackling homelessness and rough sleeping.
