Westminster's Labour Council is failing hard-working local people

Swaddle Speaks Up

This Labour-led Council is failing our City on housing. Since 2022, when Labour took control, they have failed to add any significant numbers to the house-building plan for the Council. Three years of inaction.

But worse than that, they have stripped out from the plans a huge percentage of the intermediate housing, which is housing aimed at people who live and work in our great City. This is provided at below market rent to make it affordable. It has higher thresholds for income and so helps those who earn more than £26,000 a year, people who will never qualify for social housing but would otherwise struggle to find affordable housing in Westminster.

This means that key workers on modest incomes have effectively been told that there is no place in Westminster for them. Labour are making a City in which you have to be poor or rich – nothing for the squeezed middle. This is not fairer, and what we need is a City for All. It is expensive to live in our City and people like teachers, police officers and nurses need more intermediate housing to allow them to be able to afford to live here.

We pledge that if our Conservative team win the elections in May 2026 then we will increase the amount of housing for these vital key workers.

PS We need more intermediate housing, especially for key workers in our NHS and other public services. Share your experiences with us.

Help hold Westminster's Labour Council to account

Monday, 18 August, 2025
At Full Council meetings, members of the public have a unique opportunity to directly question the Labour administration on issues that matter most to you. We've observed a concerning trend: a tendency to fill these vital public slots with pre-arranged, 'easy' questions. This silences the genuine concerns of our community. That's why we need your help to ensure real issues are heard.
