Cllr Paul Swaddle OBE, Leader of the Opposition Conservative Group at Westminster Council, has today spoken out against Labour Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan's plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street - plans which are only backed by 4,000 people across the whole of London!

Paul explains

I'm here on Oxford Street. Sadiq Khan has released the results of a consultation this morning that shows that 4,000 people across all of London think that his idea is a good idea.

We will be fighting the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street, because it's very clear that local residents do not think it's a good idea.

Sadiq Khan has not explained how all the buses and taxis and cycles will be repositioned.

He's not explained how the accessibility issues will be addressed.

He's not explained how it's going to be paid for.

He's not asked Police how to make it safe.

He has managed to get 4,000 people to say yes, but we say no. No to Pedestrianisation.

And we will fight Sadiq Khan, unlike Labour locally, who are rolling over and agreeing with him.

If you share our concern about the future of Oxford Street, please sign our petition below, calling on Westminster Council and the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to listen to local people.

Our Plan for Safe Streets

Its time for Safe Streets in Westminster

Wednesday, 1 April, 2026
Under Labour, crime has got worse. Phone theft, antisocial behaviour, public disorder and drug dealing have all increased. People think twice before using their phone on the street. Shopkeepers have accepted shoplifting as a daily reality. Families avoid their local parks. And schools have lost community police officers. All under Sadiq Khan’s watch as Westminster Labour have overseen managed decline.
