Park Lane: Call for Westminster Council and TfL to tackle Tent Cities now

Cllr Paul Swaddle is the Leader of the Conservative Group at Westminster City Council. He went to Park Lane this morning to see first-hand how the problem of the tent city is getting worse, and how the Labour-led Westminster Council and TfL is failing to take action.

Paul explains

"I'm here on Park Lane again.

"And the tents here are no better than they were months ago.

"In fact, they're worse.

"New tents appear to be arriving every day.

"Westminster Council and TfL need to get this sorted ASAP.

"This city is starting to fall apart and it's under their watch."

Labour-led Westminster Council and TfL need to get this sorted as soon as possible. Concerningly, the lack of action by the Council and by TfL is encouraging these tents to grow - not just on Park Lane but across our city.

Local people, school children, workers and visitors should not have to tolerate seeing tents build up on our streets.

We regularly receive reports of drug use, drug dealing and defecation on the streets near homeless tents, alongside local people being verbally abused by some of those begging.

We need to see these tents cleared and help given to people sleeping rough, such as mental health and addiction support, alongside a sustainable route off the streets.

Immediate action alongside suitable support for the homeless is needed.

London Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan has given Oxford Street the green light for pedestrianisation.Let’s be clear: the Mayor is putting his legacy project ahead of the real concerns local people and businesses have raised about accessibility, bus routes, and traffic being displaced into surrounding street
