Historic Gas Lamps

Most of the 300 remaining gas lamps in Westminster are in St. James's ward from the Smith Square area next to Parliament, near St. James's Palace and in Covent Garden. The Council has designed gas effect LED lanterns in an attempt to make them to look almost indistinguishable from the original lanterns whilst retaining the existing lamp columns.

Many local residents and heritage organisations, like the Victorian Society, are urging the Council to think again. Your local councillors are adamant that the existing heritage gas lamps should be retained and are sceptical about the financial and carbon benefits of the gas effect LED lanterns.

The website of the London Gasketeers makes the case for retaining the gas lamps. The Gas Lamp Review page on the Council's website explains the Council's  arguments. Please let the Council know your views by email.
