Greener Housing

Conservative-led Westminster Council is determined to tackle the climate emergency and to help householders make their homes more energy efficient in order to reduce household bills and make the cost of living cheaper.

Until recently, there were challenges to retrofitting homes in Westminster, especially those in historic buildings. Now, thanks to a new scheme, householders can get discounted advice if they wish to install slimline double glazing, green roofs or walls, solar panels, including those as part of Westminster’s ‘Solar Together’ scheme, or air source or ground source heat pumps.

At £300, the written advice is considerably cheaper than the £1,644 previously charged for pre-application planning advice on a listed building. The advice can help give comfort to those living in listed buildings who want to make energy-efficient changes to their homes but want to ensure that they are legally preserving the special architectural or historic interest of their property.

You can find more about the advice here and make an application for advice here. You can also find more advice in the Retrofitting and Sustainable Design chapter of the Council’s Environmental Supplementary Planning Document.
