"Safe streets - for everyone who lives, visits or works in Westminster" - Cllr Rachael Robathan

Cllr Rachael Robathan is the Leader of Westminster City Council. She's taken time out from her busy schedule to talk about what the Council is doing to make the streets of Westminster safer for everyone.

One of the things that comes up frequently as I talk to residents around the City is safety, the need to feel safe when people are out and about walking on our streets and particularly women and young women.

And as the mother of a 22-year-old daughter, I really understand the importance of this.

So I'm really pleased that we've done four things recently, which are really addressing this.

First is I'm delighted that we have 50 extra police officers on the streets of the West End, and hopefully residents have noticed that increased presence when they're out and about.

Second, we're lobbying the Government for more measures to tackle rogue short-term let landlords, and particularly so that people who are living in apartment blocks will know who's coming in and out of their buildings, and that will give them a feeling of security.

Number three, we take very seriously our responsibility of making sure that our streets are well lit and safe.

And finally, we're expanding our really successful Soho Angels scheme from Soho across the whole of the West End.

This is a scheme where we're working with volunteers and the London Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance and of course, the police, to provide a helping hand to people who may need it overnight, who are out and feel lost or vulnerable in whatever way.

Tonight, I'm out in Soho working with the teams to see for myself the great work that they're doing.

So these are all things that I hope will help to make people feel safer as they're out and about enjoying our City.

Our Plan for Safe Streets

It's time for Safe Streets in Westminster

Wednesday, 1 April, 2026
Under Labour, crime has got worse. Phone theft, antisocial behaviour, public disorder and drug dealing have all increased. People think twice before using their phone on the street. Shopkeepers have accepted shoplifting as a daily reality. Families avoid their local parks. And schools have lost community police officers. All under Sadiq Khan’s watch as Westminster Labour have overseen managed decline.
