Air Pollution

Following the declaration of a Climate Emergency, Westminster City Council has set out an Air Quality Action Plan to tackle air pollution in our city. Approximately 250,000 people call Westminster their home, and another 1 million visit every day.

With parts of Westminster recording some of the worst air quality in Europe, urgent action is vital. This plan sets out measures we will take to improve air quality in Westminster between 2020 and 2024. Aiming to make the city carbon-neutral by 2030, our plan focuses on initiatives such as:

  • Reducing emissions from buildings and development
  • Leading the way in electric-vehicle infrastructure
  • Encouraging a shift away from polluting vehicles
  • Working with partners such as schools, businesses and universities to reduce emissions

For the first time, our action plan commits Westminster to meeting World Health Organisation guidelines for air pollution, which go over and above targets set in UK law. Setting this ambitious target emphasises our commitment to improving the air we all breathe in Westminster.

The Council is keen to hear your thoughts - you can have your say on our Air Quality Action Plan by clicking here. Our consultation is open now and will end at midnight on Tuesday 3 March.
