Portman Estate Tree

We continue to pursue the Clean Air measures first initiated in our Ward, now being pursued across Westminster and further afield. In addition to wider air-quality initiatives, more trees have recently been planted on George Street, an event celebrated with a tree-planting ceremony attended by Mark Field, your local MP, Cllr. Barbara Arzymanow, Simon Loomes of the Portman Estate, and staff-members from WildWestEnd (see photo).

The City of Westminster maintains 9,000 existing street-trees, and we aim to plant another 3,000 by 2021. There are over 650 Tree Preservation Orders protecting thousands of trees across the City.

Meanwhile, as part of our campaign against drivers idling at the kerb, Cllr Nickie Aiken (our Conservative Council Leader) would like the Council to have the power to issue immediate fines to repeat-offenders. She was quoted on the front page of The Times saying: “Fines are our last resort, but when we establish a pattern of persistent idling, we need to be able to send a message.”

We are encouraging local people to give out #DontBeIdle posters, for businesses to display in their shop-windows. Please let us know if you would like to receive some posters. Alternatively you can download a poster here.
