A winning deal for local people: 292 Vauxhall Bridge Road to become Citizen M Hotel

There have been two recent planning applications directly affecting people living in the area of the cathedral. Firstly, a hotel chain, Citizen M, had applied to build a hotel at 292 Vauxhall Bridge which directly overlooks Carlisle Mansions. Citizen M were finally granted planning permission to build their hotel last week after substantially scaling back their original plans. Conservative Councillors Danny Chalkley, David Harvey and Selina Short, the Cathedral Areas Residents’ Group and Carlisle Mansions neighbours worked as a team to win a workable compromise from Citizen M.

However, matters were still uncertain on the evening of the Planning Committee. Cllr Short led pressure for a deferral on proposed height and massing, Citizen M agreed immediately to reduce the height by removing another floor. Cllr Short checked with the local people and the compromise was agreed - meaning there should be no more impact on local residents’ light from the new building than there already is from the current buildings.

Cllr Short says “I really want to congratulate the residents on a well-run campaign. I was also impressed by the collaborative attitude of Citizen M who took onboard in the re-designs almost all of the concerns of local people. The planned Hotel will have some extremely positive impact. It will provide oversight onto King’s Scholars’ Passage to reduce current drug related anti-social behaviour, which is much needed. We now need to work on the neighbouring application.”

4C Hotels redeveloping 268-282 Vauxhall Bridge Road

4C have been refused planning permission for their first design – again because Councillors, CARG and local people worked together with Cllr Selina Short making representations on behalf of residents at the Planning Committee. 4C are now working with residents and the Council on a revised plan. Please do email us on [email protected] if you have any questions about this application.

More Police in Marylebone

Tuesday, 3 June, 2025
The single most important issue that residents tell us matters to them is feeling safe when walking around the area.

Unfortunately, we regularly receive reports about shoplifting in Marylebone. We have managed to get the council to install several CCTV cameras.
