New Leader for Westminster City Council
Many congratulations to Cllr Nickie Aiken who has been appointed as the new Leader of Westminster City Council’s Conservative Group. Subject to a vote by Full Council, when it meets on 25th January, she is expected to be formally approved as the next Leader of Westminster City Council.
Councillor Aiken said: “I will be humbled and proud to lead Westminster City Council if I am elected on 25th January. Westminster is a complex and unique urban environment, but more importantly it is home to a quarter of a million people. As we look towards the future challenges, we must redouble our efforts to ensure Westminster secures the resources and implements the policies that deliver services our residents deserve, our one million daily visitors expect and support our 50,000 plus businesses to thrive. That means building on the strong foundations of our City for All programme, ensuring that we provide opportunities for our residents, as well as encouraging aspiration and responsibility amongst our communities and acting as proud custodians of this unique place. The guiding principles of my civic leadership will be openness, transparency and responsibility."
Lighting of Christmas Lights and Tree at Tachbrook Market
Warwick ward councillors Nickie Aiken and Jacqui Wilkinson were delighted to welcome the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Cllr Steve Summers and Lady Mayoress, Mrs Kate McCarthy, to officially switch on our Christmas lights. Great to see so many residents there enjoying the hot chocolate, mulled wine and panettone thanks to local restaurant, Uno, and fabulous carols sung by South Westminster Community Choir.
We believe it's important to support our local shops and Tachbrook Market.
Handel's Messiah at St Gabriel's
On 13th December, St Gabriel’s Church, Warwick Square resounded to over 100 voices with the combined choirs of Pimlico primary school children, the Pimlico Singers and the Pimlico Musical Foundation Chorus in a performance of Handel’s Messiah.
The performance was raising money to support the work of the Pimlico Musical Foundation, which is giving primary school children locally the opportunity to learn an instrument and sing and also for The Simon Milton Foundation.
Recycling Over Christmas
There are no changes to the collection days for recycling and rubbish from household properties over Christmas and New Year.
Please put your festive packaging in your mixed recycling bags and boxes, or in your large black recycling bin if you live in a communal property. For example, you can put the following into your mixed recycling:
- Christmas cards - please remove badges and batteries.
- Paper gift bags, paper gift-wrap.
- Cardboard boxes.
- Glass jars.
You can help the environment by recycling your Christmas Tree. It will go to making woodchip and soil-improver. Any trees dumped at other sites won't be composted. Just remove all decorations and tinsel from the tree before bringing it to a recycling point from Monday 2nd January until Sunday 15th January 2017.
The Warwick Ward Christmas Tree recycling point is at Charlwood Street on the junction with Denbigh Street, next to the recycling bins.
