Fire

Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters were called to a fire at the Pembridge Hotel on Princes Square in Bayswater on Friday 15 April.

The fire affected the basement of the five storey property and crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued three adults from the building - one from the first floor and two from the second floor. All three were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service suffering from smoke inhalation. A further 200 people left the building before the Brigade arrived.

Councillor Richard Holloway said: “Well done to our brave fire crews for the incredible work they did to save lives in this terrible fire, that could have been much worse.”
Station Manager Charles Hanks who was at the scene said: "Our crews worked hard to confine the fire to the basement and to stop it from spreading to the upper floors of the hotel. Firefighters rescued three people and carried out a systematic search of the building to make sure no-one else was inside."

The Brigade was called at 2306 on Friday and the fire was under control by 0156 on Saturday morning.
Following the fire, it was discovered that there was a major discrepancy between the number of guests allowed in the hotel under the safety manual and the actual number staying in the hotel, and in general the London Fire Brigade is very unsatisfied with fire safety at the hotel.

Councillor Richard Holloway lobbied the cabinet member for public protection for the council can work with the fire service to undertake a safety audit of the hotels in Bayswater. This has been agreed and will be undertaken soon.
