Westminster Council failing to tackle abandoned e-bikes

Across Westminster, local people regularly complain about abandoned e-bikes - blocking pavements or residents' car park bays, causing a risk to older people, to the visually impaired or those with young families. We are not against cycling, but we need to make sure the needs of pedestrians and other road users are taken into account.

Westminster Conservatives' Group Leader Cllr Paul Swaddle brought GLA member Susan Hall to Lancaster Gate to see the problems first-hand and hear the frustrations of local people.

Susan Hall AM: Do you know, one of the things in inner London are bikes everywhere. And I'm in Westminster today with Paul. Paul, what's going on with this?

Cllr Paul Swaddle: Well, look, this is, yet again, a place where they've decided just litter the place with bikes. There are bays, lots of bays across Westminster, but these are all in a residents' parking bay. How are residents supposed to park?

It's outrageous that Westminster Council is doing nothing about it. Other councils, Kensington and Chelsea, even TfL, are taking bikes off the street.

Yet, Westminster refuse. It's shocking.

Susan Hall AM: It is ridiculous.

Dockless bikes’ parking chaos

Despite reassurances from the Labour-led Council, dockless bikes continue to run riot and block streets and pavements across the city. The council has introduced new parking spaces for dockless bikes and e-scooters last year, but it is clear the scheme is not working.

Homelessness and rough sleeping is rising under Labour

Monday, 16 March, 2026
The numbers are stark. Homelessness and rough sleeping in Westminster are at record highs and is the highest of any council in the UK. The Labour-led council has allowed this crisis to get worse, with near year-on-year increases, without proper support to help people off the streets. This is the reality of life under this Labour-led Council: distracted by pet projects and headlines instead of helping vulnerable people who really need it.
