Conservative-led City Council to consult local people over plans
Following the successful launch of a pilot of targeted 20mph roads in areas surrounding 38 schools, Westminster Conservatives are pledging to extend the scheme and will consult residents across the City if returned after the local elections in May.
Westminster Conservative Group Leader, Nickie Aiken, said: “Our current 20mph trial is proving popular with residents and seems to be having a positive effect on slowing traffic around the pilot schools. It therefore, seems sensible to seek to roll out the scheme in other areas where there are concerns about speeding vehicles. If residents are keen to introduce 20mph then we will deliver.”
The current trial is aiming to persuade drivers to slow down but also encourage more people to walk and cycle, which should also have a positive knock on effect for air quality, a major priority for Westminster Conservatives.
“Our aim of rolling out 20mph across the City is part of our determination to create a cleaner, greener, healthier and more pleasant environment,” Aiken continued. “We will also continue to lobby the Metropolitan Police to encourage more enforcement of the speed limit.”

Conservative-led Westminster City Council are introducing 20 mph zones at up to 40 schools and across two residential areas in Westminster over the next year. This trial is part of the council's plan to create a safer, healthier and more pleasant environment. The aim is to increase walking and cycling and to make more vulnerable road users such as older people and school children feel safer. What do you think about these plans?
