The Westminster Conservative Group welcomes attention from Parliament to the vital issue of safeguarding our historic landmarks. In response to a written question tabled by Lord Bailey of Paddington (Conservative, Life Peer) on 6 December 2024, the Home Office was asked to assess the merits of increasing police presence and protection around Grade I listed buildings, such as Westminster Cathedral.
Sadly, the Government refused to listen. In their response, delivered by Lord Hanson of Flint (Labour, Life Peer) they confirmed that decisions regarding police resourcing are made by operationally independent Chief Constables and directly elected local policing bodies, including Police and Crime Commissioners and Mayors with PCC functions.
Cllr Paul Swaddle said:
“Our historic buildings are irreplaceable national treasures, and responsible policing is key to their protection. Westminster Conservatives urge local policing bodies to review security measures for Grade I listed sites to ensure that Westminster remains safe and welcoming for all visitors.
We will continue to champion robust protection for our heritage in collaboration with law enforcement.
The Westminster Conservative Group remains committed to supporting measures that safeguard our community’s historic and cultural assets."
