A West End perspective on the need for a Short-term Lets Registration Scheme

We spoke to Cllr Rachael Robathan and local West End Conservative candidate Julie Redmond, for a West End perspective on calls for a Short-term Lets Registration Scheme.

I'm standing here with Julie Redmond, one of our great candidates in the West End ward and we've just been in Downing Street with Nickie Aiken, our MP to present a petition calling for much stronger powers around rogue short-term let landlords so that we in Westminster Council can have the powers to really crack down on where this is causing a problem.

And we know this is an issue across the whole of Westminster, but particularly in the West End ward where you're standing, Julie.

Julie explains

Absolutely, Rachael, the West End has a serious problem with short-term lets, Airbnbs.

And unfortunately, this can actually bring other problems into the West End as well, like anti-social behaviour and also dumping of rubbish, and times when it's just left out on the streets and this just actually came up a couple of days ago from residents in Fitzrovia, but I see it on a weekly basis.

More Police in Marylebone

The single most important issue that residents tell us matters to them is feeling safe when walking around the area.

Unfortunately, we regularly receive reports about shoplifting in Marylebone. We have managed to get the council to install several CCTV cameras.
