More traffic madness from Transport for London
Transport for London are consulting on replacing the Lambeth Bridge roundabout with traffic lights. Worse still, traffic will be banned from turning right off Lambeth Bridge and forced onto Horseferry Road. Traffic lights will also be installed at the junction of Millbank and Great Peter Street. And the much-loved palm, which sits in the middle of the roundabout, will be lost.
This will result in a huge increase in traffic in Vincent Square with Horseferry Road becoming clogged and rat running through the area as drivers try to avoid the resulting congestion.
Transport for London know that the scheme will increase traffic, congestion, noise, pollution and parking problems on our residential streets and irrevocably change the nature of Conservation Areas like St John’s Square and Vincent Square. Transport for London’s response to these concerns, “we hope the changes won’t cause traffic problems for residents”.
The proposals are aimed at improving safety for cyclists, which we support. However this plan will increase travel times for all road users including cyclists.
There is concern that Transport for London has failed to properly consult residents.
Many people are not aware of the scheme, which has been consulted upon over the summer.

Housing advice for private tenants
Mick Beirne and Robert Newton provide a free Housing Advice and Tenancy Relations Service for private tenants and licensees living in Westminster. They give free legal advice, on matters like security, repair, rent levels, etc. and can take up their cases too. They also enforce the landlord and tenant law on problems such as harassment, illegal eviction, etc.

Tackling rat running through the Ponsonbys
Your Conservative Councillors have been successful in campaigning for the installation of traffic enforcement cameras to stop rat running through the Ponsonby’s following the introduction of the Cycle Superhighway on Vauxhall Bridge Road by Transport for London. The banned right turns off John Islip Street into Ponsonby Place and Ponsonby Terrace are now being rigorously enforced and fines issued to drivers who flout the ban and continue to rat run.
Councillor Danny Chalkley commented, “We campaigned against the Cycle Superhighway and predicted the rat running. Residents are right to be upset about this impact on their quality of life and hopefully they will see a difference now the cameras are working”.
Rough sleepers and anti social behaviour: Cathedral area and Horseferry Road
95% of the rough sleepers who come to Westminster have no local connection and they place heavy pressure on the area around the Cathedral. Your Conservative Councillors continue to work with our charity partners, St Mungo’s, Thames reach and The Passage.
Councillor David Harvey said “Together we help over 75% into the road back to a settled life in one or two days. But some are hard to persuade or may have fallen into antisocial behaviour, drug or alcohol abuse. Working with the Police and Home Office, we have supported a strong focus on stopping ASB around the Piazza and we hope residents have noticed a positive change”.
Residents have reported rough sleeping and anti social behaviour on Horseferry Road. We need your help to collect information on incidences of rough sleeping in order that we can create a body of evidence for presentation to the Police.
Support for Pimlico Toy Library
Your Conservative Councillors are delighted, once again, to support the fantastic work of Pimlico Toy Library with our Ward Budget. Pimlico Toy Library promotes the early development of our youngest residents through play especially our less well off families.
Councillor Steve Summers commented, “if you are running a Vincent Square focused voluntary project, you can apply for a Ward Budget grant. Amounts range from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds.”

Westminster Council keeps weekly plus waste collections
86% of UK councils now provide a waste collection only once every two weeks. Labour run Camden Council is the latest London council to move to fortnightly collections for residents. Only three councils still collect waste several times every week, including Westminster City Council. 90% of our residents live in flats and we want ensure homes are healthy.
In Westminster, all residents receive a least two waste collections and one recycling collection per week.
