Your Councillors are pleased to see that the Mayor of London has backed down over plans to scrap the Taxicard scheme, which helps disabled Londoners get about their daily lives. A high-profile campaign led by London Conservatives has secured the continuation of the service across all 32 London boroughs, plus the City of London, until December 2019.
In Westminster, Taxicard holders are entitled to 72 discounted fares each year, paying £2.50 for a fare up to £10.80 on the meter. Members of the scheme pay the excess fare over £10.80 themselves. On longer journeys, they have the option of paying the excess fare over £10.80, or of counting the journey as two (i.e. swiping the Taxicard twice).
You may be eligible for a Taxicard if you:
• receive the higher-rate mobility-component of the Disability Living Allowance or the higher rate Attendance Allowance
• are registered blind
• receive the War Pension Mobility Component
If none of these apply to you, you may still be eligible if your GP endorses your application, though you may also have to have a mobility assessment.
