Blocks

Following co-ordinated intervention by the Bathurst Action Group and court proceedings by Westminster City Council, a particularly anti-social landlord has now given up his lease on a Bathurst Street property that was being used nightly for noisy parties and other disruptive activity.

Letting a property on a short-term basis is legal for up to 90 nights a year. Beyond that total, and without planning permission, it is illegal and can lead to a £20,000 fine. Problem short-letting means some buildings in Westminster are effectively badly managed hotels, and the practice is so lucrative it reduces the availability of much needed long-term housing. Residents who are affected by the noise, disturbance, and potential loss of block insurance cover entailed by problem short-letting can help Westminster City Council enforce against the landlords involved.

Email [email protected] for details of how to keep a record of activity at problem properties. In Park West, a building frequently affected by this problem, Westminster City Council is preparing an information leaflet to distribute to all residents. The council is also planning to use environmental health and Housing Act powers more extensively where the accommodation is substandard or dangerous.
