"Our Commitment to Zero Carbon Emissions, as Council and as a City" - Cllr Rachael Robathan

We caught up with Cllr Rachael Robathan earlier, as she explained Conservative-led Westminster City Council's commitment to zero carbon emission by 2030.

Rachael explains,

One of the most important challenges that we have in Westminster is how we meet our commitment to be zero carbon emission by 2030 as a council and 2040 as a City.

And for us as Westminster Conservatives, this isn't just a piece of paper, this is a real commitment and a drive.

And the most important thing that we have to do in Westminster is to tackle how our built environment works, because that accounts for 86% of our emissions, how our buildings are actually built, also how we use them.

We've done a number of things already. We brought in new environmental planning policies. We've looked at a retrofitting programme across all of our social housing to make it more energy-efficient.

And we've also launched a Sustainable City Charter with our key landlords to look at how we occupy homes in a much more environmentally sustainable way. But we're also doing things to make active travel easier and an easier choice for our residents, so to cycle or walk more and also to use EV charging points wherever they can.

We have more EV charging points in Westminster than any other borough.

And finally, we're rolling out food recycling across the whole of the City this year.

So this is an ongoing partnership with our residents, with our businesses, but we as Westminster Conservatives are absolutely committed to reach this challenge.

Help hold Westminster's Labour Council to account

Monday, 18 August, 2025
At Full Council meetings, members of the public have a unique opportunity to directly question the Labour administration on issues that matter most to you. We've observed a concerning trend: a tendency to fill these vital public slots with pre-arranged, 'easy' questions. This silences the genuine concerns of our community. That's why we need your help to ensure real issues are heard.
