New Trees

We have doubled the number of trees planted in the streets of Westminster over the past 25 years, with the aim of optimising canopy cover, bringing shade and air quality benefits, as well as mitigating climate change. There is now limited space left in this densely populated area but we have a few more sites locally which are included in the current programme.

Around 75% of the City of Westminster falls within conservation areas, which means that tree owners need to notify the Council before they remove or prune trees. Many thousands of trees in the City are also protected by Tree Preservation Orders. Our dedicated and professional tree team makes sure that unnecessary tree removal or pruning is prevented.

By protecting and maintaining trees in both the public and private realm, we are preserving and enhancing our tree population both now and in the future.

Councillor Heather Acton said: "As well as bringing shade and helping to improve air quality, trees are known to have a positive impact on our mental health and wellbeing. Let us know if you can think of spaces to plant trees."
