Play improvements
Providing safe facilities for children to enjoy play activities and sport is a major objective for your Little Venice Conservative councillors. We are working on a scheme to upgrade the play facilities on the Hall Park Estate. This will involve renewing the play surface as well as upgrading the play equipment. This is a well-used facility which would benefit from newer equipment so that it can be used by many children for many years to come.
We are also working on a project for an improved play surface at Paddington Green School which would be of value to the school in return for providing community use. The facility would be accessed via Little Venice Sports Centre. In addition we will continue to support boxing club sessions that are run at the sports centre on a weekly basis.
Little Venice Conservative councillor Barbara Arzymanow said: ‘I am delighted that we could support these projects that will do so much to enhance the lives of children in the area.’
Recycling efforts
The need and desire to recycle in Little Venice Ward has always been a top priority for residents. Conservative ward councillors have encouraged this by paying for a second weekly recycling waste collection out of their ward budget funds for several years. As previously reported, this second collection is now integrated into the mainstream service.
In order to enhance the service further, a number of pilot schemes are to be tried to encourage even more recycling in the ward and across the city. You will see an increase in the number of collections of on-street recycling bins at the weekends. We will also be opening up some of these bins so that larger pieces of cardboard, used with home shopping deliveries, can be placed in these containers. The heavily used Warwick Avenue recycling centre will also get a facelift and its signage will be improved.
Little Venice Conservative councillor Melvyn Caplan said: ‘We are pleased to provide additional ways to make recycling easier for residents and to enable them to contribute to reducing the amount of waste.’
A safe place to live and study around Paddington Green
Your local Little Venice Conservative councillors recently convened a roundtable meeting with senior representatives from City of Westminster College’s Paddington Green campus, plus local police, the council and CityWest Homes. The meeting was held to discuss resident and student safety in the area, given the high number of young learners who arrive in the area each weekday for their studies. Already the college and CityWest Homes have cooperated on joint signage in and around Hall Park Estate, reminding students to respect the privacy of the estate.
The local police now provide a dedicated uniformed police officer at the college, and this has helped to maintain a safe environment for both students in and around the college as well as local residents. Little Venice Councillor Ian Adams, who also serves as a Governor at City of Westminster College and is a Board Member of CityWest Homes, said: ‘The meeting provided reassurance that the police are working closely with partners, including the college, on behalf of local residents and students, providing reassurance through their visible presence.’
Annual Tea Dance returns
Westminster Council’s annual Tea Dance hosted by Older People’s Champion, Cllr Christabel Flight, takes place on Sunday 6th November at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane for residents aged 65 or over. Last year actress Joanna Lumley joined guests dancing, jiving, eating and talking.
Cllr Christabel Flight said: "The tea dance is a chance for older people to get out of the house and enjoy a glamorous afternoon of dancing and companionship. It’s a great way for people to get together with friends, make new ones and have a fun afternoon. Loneliness can have a devastating effect on people’s lives as well as their physical and mental wellbeing and we hope that the tea dance goes a little way in helping to alleviate it, even if just for an afternoon.”
