Key workers are often regarded as the lifeblood of our community; junior doctors, nurses, teachers, those in the police, the fire service, ambulance service etc. But under the new Labour Council in Westminster, a decision has been taken to slash new key worker homes by 75%.
Of the 200 key worker homes earmarked in the previous Conservative administration’s next stage house building plans, only 49 will now be built. The other homes will now be made available as social rent properties, broadly referred to as council housing. This almost never includes key workers but instead includes the general housing register when key workers should be able to live here too.
We have heard this is a hammer blow to our city’s hard-working key workers, especially in a cost-of-living crisis and off the back of the pandemic, where they worked so hard to keep the city going.
Cllr David Harvey says
“We have grave concerns over this decision, which is deeply unfair and unreasonable for some of the most valued members of our society.
"This sends a clear message to our nurses, teachers, and paramedics that they are welcome to work in our city but not live here. We have asked Labour to reverse this decision, they refused”.
