Westminster has become the first place in the world to have innovative green lamp posts installed.
Six lamp posts have recently been retrofitted along Ebury Street, by the Grosvenor Estate, with green columns incorporating a range of vegetation able to promote biodiversity and improve air quality. The columns, which have been developed by The Scotscape Group alongside Greenwich University, also provide an attractive focal point on the street.
The environmental impact of the lamp posts will be assessed through a recently installed air quality monitor on the street as part of the London Air Quality Network, run by King’s College London.
On the installation of the lampposts local Conservative Westminster City Councillor Jacqui Wilkinson explained, “This is a world-first environmental pilot and it's great that it's happening here in Westminster. Green columns have now been installed on six lamp posts on Ebury Street, incorporating a range of vegetation able to promote biodiversity, purify the air and provide an attractive focal point on the street."
Tim Mitchell, the Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, added, "The Council is always looking for ways to increase the "green" infrastructure in Westminster and this initiative is an innovative way of adding plants that both help improve air quality and make the street look attractive.”
