Grosvenor Group have recently announced plans for the redevelopment of Cundy Street Flats and Walden House (the adjacent Council-leased block). They say the proposals will deliver more homes, new amenities and improved public spaces. Works are not expected to begin before mid-2021 and no planning application has yet been submitted. Westminster Council has already begun work on rehousing options for Walden House tenants and engaging with local people there.
Whilst this is not the council’s regeneration project, Cllr Gassanly recognises that it is likely to have a significant impact on this part of Belgravia. We are therefore keen to engage with the local community and hear from residents affected by the proposals. We are already talking to Grosvenor and pushing for the best deal for the whole community.
We do need more housing locally and there is a shortage of affordable sheltered accommodation for the elderly in this part of South Westminster. However, it is equally important to ensure current tenants are properly looked after and that any future scheme reflects high heritage value and architectural quality of the local conservation area. Local residents have undergone years of construction and disruption – any proposals should be sensitive to this problem.
We will be visiting Cundy Flats in the coming weeks to hold door-step surgeries. Contact Councillor Murad Gassanly to discuss the project, to raise any issues or if you’re an affected resident and need advice on your housing options please get in touch.
