Air quality is just as much of a priority for you as it is for us - this is why it is at the top of our agenda for Westminster.
Idling vehicles are some of the worst offenders when it comes to dirtying the air we breathe, so Westminster Conservatives are cracking down on them hard.
Our #DontBeIdle campaign has cracked down on these and despite carrying out more enforcement than most other local authorities, Westminster is seeking more power to clamp down on repeat offenders, including the ability to issue fines immediately.
This call for action has now been supported by the environment secretary, Michael Gove, who is endorsing Westminster’s call for more power to fine drivers without warning.
Conservative-run Westminster has also made great strides with delivery and taxi companies encouraging their drivers not to leave their engines idling. However, for companies who leave their vans idling, such as supermarket delivery vans, the Council is considering implementing a four figure fine.
Council leader Nickie Aiken said: “Fines are a last resort, but we must send a clear message; if you are polluting our air unnecessarily, there will be consequences.
“Our #DontBeIdle campaign is just part of our strategy to improve Westminster’s air quality. We’re increasing the number of electric car charging points, using cutting edge technology to reduce the pollutants from our bin lorries, and planting more trees. These among other ideas are all part of our commitment to make Westminster the cleanest and greenest city in the country.”
