Caring and supporting the most vulnerable, young and old, is and will always remain our top priority

We spoke with Cllr Rachael Robathan, Leader of Westminster City Council earlier. Rachael explained why caring for and supporting the most vulnerable, young and old, is and will always remain the most important priority for the Conservative-led Council.

One of the things that we do which is most important as a council is make sure that we provide the support and help that people need and the opportunities to make the full potential for their lives.

And I'm really proud of the fact that in Westminster under this Conservative administration, we have children's services that are rated outstanding and also some of the best schools in the country which means that our children, no matter what their background, where they've come from, what their circumstances are, have equal opportunity to achieve their full potential in life.

And also our older people. It is so important that they have the right support and accommodation to be able to live in their own communities for as long as possible and as independently as possible.

One of the things I'm proudest of over the last four years is that this Conservative administration has delivered Beachcroft, a brand new state of the art nursing home facility in the north of the borough, but we're also building more sheltered accommodation in both the north and the south of the City.

So that means that people will have the accommodation and support to be able to live independently for as long as possible here in Westminster.

On Tuesday, the Deputy Mayor of London announced that Sadiq Khan would be taking over Oxford Street early, with Transport for London designated as the traffic authority for the street. It was clear by the nature of the announcement that Westminster City Council were not prepared for this.
