Call for action on Great Peter Street anti-social behaviour

Westminster St James's Cllr Mark Shearer was out in the early hours this morning - to understand first-hand the issues local people are having with crime and anti-social behaviour in and around Great Peter's Street, in Victoria.

Mark explained

"Hi, my name is Mark Shearer and I'm a councillor at Westminster Council for St James's Ward. It's half past midnight, and the reason I'm here is because the residents are absolutely sick and tired of the criminality and the anti-social behaviour going on here at Great Peter Street, just off Victoria Street.

A lot of it happens around this hostel. We've spoken to the management, the guards, they're doing their best, but quite frankly, things need to improve here because no one's getting any sleep and people don't feel safe on the streets.

There are a number of things that we're doing. We're working closely with our officers to put law behind things like CBOs, to help the police to enforce more.

So we need the police to really get down here and to nick the drug dealers and to take them off the streets.

We need the hostel to be a better neighbour and we're looking at their contract and how we can reinforce that.

And the third thing is we have Westminster CCTV cameras here and we need to make sure they're more effective in creating enforcement and stopping what's going on.

So I just wanted to give you a quick update. I hope that does that. And please follow us for more on this in the coming months."
