Airbnb-style short-term lets: Time for enforcement action

Swaddle Speaks Up

Short-term lets, via platforms such as Airbnb, are seemingly out of control across much of Westminster. Our community's well-being and the integrity of our neighbourhoods are paramount, we have all seen the problems of dumped rubbish and noisy parties. It's essential we tackle the proliferation of short-term rentals.

Existing Regulations and Enforcement

Currently, property owners can offer short-term lets for up to 90 nights per year without planning permission. However, the Labour-led Westminster Council’s enforcement of this regulation has been almost non-existent. The short-term lets enforcement team is only just increasing to four people! And there are thought to be over 10,000 short-term lets. We need to focus on prosecuting those who are blatantly abusing the rules, then publicise this enforcement to get others to comply.

The Need for Robust Licensing

To effectively manage short-term lets, a robust licensing system is essential. The previous Conservative Government passed legislation for a registration scheme for short-term lets to tackle abuse. This was passed in Parliament before last year's General Election, but we are still awaiting the scheme's implementation. Our Labour-led Council needs to be calling for the Labour government to deliver this.

Taking Decisive Action

We are committed to preserving the quality of life for everyone who lives in Westminster. We need to enforce existing regulations and call for the comprehensive licensing system to be implemented urgently.
