Following months of speculation about the future of Belgravia Police Station, Westminster Conservatives understand that the Labour Deputy Mayor for Policing, Sophie Linden has agreed its closure, breaking her promise to keep it open.
The historic police station serves people across the whole of south Westminster including Pimlico, Begravia, Vincent Square and Victoria.
The front counter at Belgravia closed late last year, but in a letter from the Deputy Mayor sent to Labour councillors in November she confirmed that the rest of the police station was safe. Sadly, Ms Linden has broken her word and we now learn that Labour is to close our station for good by 2020.
Conservative Westminster Council Leader, Cllr Nickie Aiken explained: “I really do now fear for the future of neighbourhood policing across Westminster. First it was the merging of Westminster police team with two other boroughs, now it is confirmation that our police station is to close, even after assurances this wasn’t the case.
“Enough is enough. The Labour Mayor and his deputy can no longer blame Government cuts, having only last week received a further £59m for policing. I call on the Deputy Mayor to rethink these plans.”
