Westminster City Council will introduce the Warwick Way One-Way Scheme in 2025, with work starting in January. This includes one-way westbound traffic on Warwick Way allowing the widening of pavements on both sides. While these changes may make a positive difference for people walking through Warwick Way and the shops, cafes, and restaurants in the area, they will also affect the flow of vehicles, especially into the area around Vincent Square. You can find out more here.
There has been much opposition to the Warwick Way One-Way Scheme to the east of Vauxhall Bridge Road from people living in Vincent Square ward. Many local people feel the Labour-led Council has pushed the project through, without first addressing the access problems this causes people in the Vincent Square ward, from Warwick Way across Vauxhall Bridge Road towards Rochester Row. As Conservatives, we wanted to address these concerns from the outset.
TfL's past actions have made it harder for vehicles - including taxis, business deliveries, and emergency responders - to access our area. For instance, TfL introduced no left turns along Vauxhall Bridge Road and no left turn from Grosvenor Road.
Over 12,000 people live in Vincent Square Ward, and although there has been a reduction of people with private cars, we still need to be able to have taxis, deliveries and the emergency and other public services. The great concern is that with this latest change, will put even more pressure on a few residential roads to provide access to the whole of the ward. There was a statutory consultation – which was clearly against the Warwick Way scheme. However, the Council disregarded this because so many people replied in an identical way using the text shared by a local NHS surgery concerned about medical access.
It is important to note that Warwick Way is Vincent Square ward’s nearest shopping street and therefore any real improvements to the street are good for everyone who lives, works or visits this part of Westminster.
